What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care is a type of patient care which is based on the principle of providing treatment to relieve symptoms in patients with terminally ill conditions such as advanced cancer, dementia etc.
It helps to improve the quality of life and alleviate stress in patients and their families. It is also known as comfort based care.
Once palliative approach is planned, patient's symptom management will be given utmost importance than treatment for underlying disease. However main treatment and palliative care can go simultaneously in certain conditions.
Palliative approach helps to avoid use of unnecessary investigations and treatment modalities which are often painful as well as not beneficial to the patient.
Principles of Palliative Care
> Affirms life and regards dying as a normal process
> Neither hastens nor postpones death
> Provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms
> Integrates the psychological and spiritual aspects of care
> Offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death
> Offers a support system to help patients' families cope during the patient's illness and in their own bereavement

Does Palliative care means "End of life"/ "Hopeless situation"?
No. Palliative care is based on principle of treating the symptoms to keep patient comfortable. It significantly improves patient's quality of life free from distress.
Is it safe to manage patient with terminal disease at home?
Patients who are stable or who requires minimal support can be safely managed at home with assistance of a trained family member or medical provider with supervision from a Doctor. Elderly patients prefer to be at their own home with family at end of life rather than in a hospital ICU.
What are advantages of choosing a Palliative approach ?
Palliative approach/ comfort based care helps to maintain quality of life, avoids un necessary treatment modalities which may even cause distress to patient. It also helps patient and family to understand and adjust to the disease. However in certain conditions, medical treatment and palliative care can go simultaneously.
